History

Southgate Symphony Orchestra formed in 1961 when a privately-run group of enthusiasts invited Terry Hawes to conduct them in New Barnet. When Terry was appointed as music lecturer at the newly-open Southgate Technical College in 1963, the New Barnet group became the founding members of his evening class orchestra. Southgate College Symphony Orchestra, as it was known, continued as an evening class at Southgate College until the summer of 2005. The Orchestra then became a fully independent body, and renamed itself Southgate Symphony Orchestra, becoming a registered charity in 2007. Read more...

 

Conductor: Adrian Brown

Adrian Brown was appointed Musical Director of Southgate Symphony Orchestra in 2007 and comes from a distinguished line of Sir Adrian Boult's most gifted pupils. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in London, he studied intensively with Sir Adrian for some years. He remains the only British conductor to have reached the finals of the Karajan Conductors' Competition.
